As the summer disappears and winter is on our doorstep it’s hard not to feel that something is being taken away from us. Well that’s how some may feel, but not me. As the days are getting shorter and a little cooler I like to get busy. Not busy with work. I’m talking about getting busy outdoors. This time of year the wind turns off shore and there is usually a little more swell around so what could be better than putting your wetsuit on for a surf under the winter sun. This could be during a break from work at Newcastle beach or another close favourite surf spot or on a short trip away from Newcastle. The next activity that keeps me busy during the shorter days may be a bit of a surprise to some but there is nothing like a snow trip (yes we have snow in […]
A couple of weeks ago we got an email from a lovely couple from Newcastle regarding our book swap. They are expecting a baby and started clearing out their spare room and had a lot of books and not a lot of room to put them. So they offered to donate the books to us. https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/so-many-books/ https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/so-many-books/ https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/so-many-books/They used to stay in Backpackers a fair bit themselves and know what it’s like to be on the hunt for a good read. When Martin walked in with the huge box I was totally overwhelmed by the amount of books they were giving to us. All off them in a great condition! Thank you sooooooo much Martin and family and congratulations on the baby!
While traveling Australia you might have to change your clocks a few times. You could turn the time back and forth anything between 30min and 4 hours. That goes to show how big this country is. Time zones follow roughly the longitudes. To make it a bit more confusing some states have daylight savings (‘summer time’) whereas others don’t. Sadly for us in NSW the long days of summer are over tonight. https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/end-of-summer-time/ https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/end-of-summer-time/ https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/end-of-summer-time/Daylight savings ends and we will turn back time. Hoooray for me because my morning shift basically starts one hour later Reason enough to get up a bit earlier today to watch the sun rise before work.
A journey is best measured in friends rather then miles. (Tim Cahill) Take a deep breath, slow down and take in the here and now. Spend a night with new friends and create memories that aren’t captured in photos because you were too busy having fun :)https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/the-joy-of-travelling/https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/the-joy-of-travelling/https://www.backpackersbythebeach.com.au/the-joy-of-travelling/
This years Easter long weekend starts on Friday the 29th of March (Good Friday). On Good Friday Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Schools, post offices, shops andsupermarkets are closed and there are tight restrictions on alcohol sale. Many families take advantage of the 4-day weekend and go away. Make sure you book hostels ahead as it can get quiet busy. It is an Australian tradition to eat hot cross buns on Good Friday. They are small buns flavoured with spices and raisins and marked with a cross on top. Make sure to buy some on Thursaday and heat them up on Friday morning for breakfast. Eat them as they are or with butter and jam. Yumm Easter Sunday is mostly spend with the family. Its a great day to gather some fellow travellers and have a picnic in the park. Buy some treats and have a little international […]

Newcastle is the place to be at the moment for anyone that enjoys world class surfing action. Surfest has come early this year with the re-scheduling of Newcastle’s 6 star international surf contest. In it’s 28th year Surfest is Australia’s largest surfing festival and will run from February 1 and conclude with the finals on February 24. Originally the contest was held at Newcastle Beach though in 2007 it was decided to move the contest over the hill to Merewether Beach. The relocation was met with mixed reactions from both residents and competitors. 2012’s runner up Filipe Toledo is back staying at Backpackers by the Beach and is very keen to erase last year’s inteference call which cost him the title by going one better. Everyone here at Backpackers by the Beach wishes Filipe and all the other competitors staying here the best of luck and I’m sure all the […]
The Foreshore has plenty to offer, so it’s a great place to start. Try the Brewery, for great beer, food & entertainment or the Nor East Restaurant for one of Newcastle’s best meals. Just along the wharf, we have Blue Water Pizza, gourmet wood-fired pizza, next to it the Starfish Cafe, and another short walk is the famous Scratchleys Restaurant. Further along are some great new restaurants, the Becton Apartments and the Crown Plaza Hotel. If you keep walking (15-20 min), you end up at the Marina, where you can buy some great seafood at the local co-op. What about Darby Street for a feed and some culture. It’s the place to hang and watch the crowd go by. So many restaurants to choose from – try Longbench, Goldbergs, The Bistro, The Mortar & Pestle, or if it’s pub food you are hanging out for, The Delany Hotel is the […]
